Adebayor set for rare Tottenham appearance
Emmanuel Adebayor is in line to make his first appearance of the season for Tottenham Hotspur, the Guardian has reported, when Andre Villas-Boas’ side meet Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday.
Villas-Boas was keen to find a buyer over the summer for the former Manchester City striker and when it became clear Adebayor was not on anyone’s shopping list, he was made to train with the club’s development squad, away from the first team. Adebayor had also been allowed to spend time away from the club and return to Togo following the death of his brother.
Despite not calling on Adebayor yet this season, Villas-Boas denied the ex-Arsenal forward had anything to prove - likewise Aaron Lennon, after it was suggested the winger has dropped down the pecking order at Tottenham following a lengthy injury absence. “They don't need opportunities or chances. They're valued and they're great quality players,” Villas-Boas said.
“This is done because of the immense talent we have at our disposal,” Villas-Boas added. “We can make six or seven changes now, which keeps the players fresh and motivated. There is always that chance they can break into the team, although both are established players and have been successful in the past.”
Although Tiraspol is part of Moldova, the Guardian notes that it is largely considered an autonomous state within a state - including its own currency, police, army and border guards, although it is not recognised officially as such.
Tottenham currently top Group K with six points from two games, four clear of Tiraspol who are in second place. The group also contains Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala and Norwegians Tromso, who each have a point.
