Villas-Boas praises Defoe after striker equals Tottenham goals record
Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas has lavished praise on Jermain Defoe after the striker equalled the club’s European goals record with his 22nd goal in continental action for the club, level with Martin Chivers, Sky Sports has reported.
Defoe’s strike came in a 2-0 Europa League win over Sheriff Tiraspol, the former Portsmouth forward confirming victory after Jan Vertonghen’s early goal had put the Premier League side on course for three points. Tottenham are now on the verge of qualification for the next round of the competition, five points clear of Anzhi Makhachkala at the top of Group K.
“It is some achievement,” Villas-Boas said. “If we continue like this, there is a big chance he will break the record. It will be another great achievement for him. I am sure he will achieve it.”
Villas-Boas did sound a note of caution, however, warning against commending Defoe for surpassing Chivers before he has actually done so. “ Let's not celebrate it before it happens, but it will be a great record for him and the club. It was another great performance by Jermain.”
The goal was Defoe’s eighth of the season in total and sixth in Europe, and means Tottenham will qualify for the round of 32 if they beat Sheriff in the return match at White Hart Lane in November.
