Wenger to make changes to Arsenal team for Capital One Cup
Arsene Wenger has confirmed he will field a much-changed Arsenal team against Chelsea in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday, Sky Sports has reported, but insists he wants to progress in the competition.
His Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho has said likewise after the Blues played on Sunday and then had only 24 hours rest before having to play the Gunners, who were in action in Saturday’s early kick-off.
Wenger added that he would not decide the exact make-up of the team until the last moment. “The team will be a mixture, with some players who are at the moment not getting the games they need and deserve, and also one or two young players,” Wenger said. “I have to get that mixture right and I will leave myself until tomorrow to decide how I do that.”
The match between the London rivals sees the Premier League leaders, Arsenal, meet the team currently in second place, and Wenger believes the League Cup fixture affords his side the chance to prove they belong to be in first place.
“This is a good opportunity for us to show we are ready.” Wenger said. “ I'm not sure it will affect the Premier League at all, but you know people will look at you, how you behave and whether you can win the big games like that.”
Wenger has never won the League Cup, reaching the final twice - the first time in 2007, when Arsenal were beaten by Mourinho’s Chelsea. It was the Portuguese’s second and final League Cup success, coming 2-1 after Theo Walcott opened the scoring. A Didier Drogba brace however took the trophy to Stamford Bridge.
