Tottenham lack creativity says former boss Hoddle
Wednesday 30 October 2013
Former Tottenham boss Glenn Hoddle has said that Spurs need more creativity if they are to finish in the top four this season, talkSPORT has reported.
Spurs have failed to qualify for the Champions League since the 2010-11 season, where they reached the quarter-finals before coming unstuck against Real Madrid. The north London side are desperate to return to Europe's top competition sooner rather than later.
Current boss Andre Villas-Boas had a busy summer, signing £108m's worth on talent to add to his squad, but he also suffered the loss of star player Gareth Bale who left for Real Madrid in a record breaking deal.
The White Hart Lane outfit have started the current campaign well and sit fourth in the Premier League having recorded six wins and suffered two defeats, one to their near rivals Arsenal.
Despite the good start goals have been lacking in the Tottenham side, and although it is early on in the season and the side is still gelling as a unit, former Spurs star Hoddle thinks it could be their downfall come the end of the season.
Spurs have scored just nine goals this term, with four of them coming in 1-0 victories, and three of them Roberto Soldado spot kicks. To avoid being beaten to that top four spot again this season, the former England boss thinks the side must improve the service for the front players.
Hoddle said: “I think it’s just top-four for Spurs, I don’t think they’re in the title-race. I think they’ve got to show a lot more creativity at the moment.
“It’s strange to say that as a Spurs player, normally it’s all about attacking and creation. But they’re about fourth or fifth in all of Europe in the defensive charts at the moment, which is unusual for Tottenham.”
He added: “They’ve got a very powerful and deep squad, they’ve got depth, a lot of quality players. But I just feel that Soldado, for instance, will score goals if he’s given more opportunities. I think that’s the next piece in the jigsaw, that’s what they’ve got to look at to become contenders [for the title]. They’ve got a strong enough squad for the top-four.”
Tottenham take on Hull City on Wednesday evening at White Hart Lane in a Capital Cup fourth round tie, only days after the two sides met in the League, with Spurs running out 1-0 winners thanks to a Soldado penalty.
