Pellegrini impressed with Pantilimon in Man City Capital One Cup triumph
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini was impressed with the performance of Costel Pantilimon during the Capital One Cup win over Newcastle, Sky Sports has reported, after the goalkeeper replaced Joe Hart, who was criticised for an error against Chelsea consigned City to defeat in their last Premier League fixture.
Pantilimon made a series of saves that ensured the game stayed goalless after 90 minutes and gave City a platform to go on and win the tie in extra time, goals from Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko setting up a quarter-final meeting with Leicester City.
“Pantilimon has always had my trust and that of the team,” Pellegrini said. “He is a good player, that's why he is here. He may not have played too much because Joe Hart plays last year and this year but I trust him to play. I think for him and the team to keep a clean sheet today was important.”
The Romanian is often City’s cup goalkeeper but the timing of his inclusion - coming so soon after Hart’s mistake against Chelsea - raised eyebrows, although Pellegrini insisted he has not decided who will play against Norwich City in the Premier League this weekend. “I will start to think about the game against Norwich on Thursday. Today I was just thinking about winning this match.
“I think that we will talk tomorrow (about the team selection),” Pellegrini continued. “One goalkeeper can play but the other will have our full support. We will think about it.”
Pantilimon joined City from FC Poli in 2011 but has yet to make a Premier League appearance for the 2011-12 champions. His outings have been entirely limited to the two domestic cups and one appearance in the Community Shield when Hart was injured.
