Tottenham and Arsenal to fight it out for Pato
Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are both keen to sign Brazil international striker Alexandre Pato, the Daily Mail has reported, with Tottenham having also attempted to recruit the former Milan forward in the summer.
Pato revealed the interest from Spurs in an interview with Sportv. “Tottenham had called Corinthians to ask for my transfer,” Pato claimed. “I sat at the table with the club and my agent and I decided I wanted to stay.”
Corinthians signed Pato from Milan earlier in 2013, paying nearly £13m to return the 24-year-old to his native country after seven years spent in Serie A. Pato joined Milan as a 17-year-old from Internacional, having scored 12 goals in 27 games in Porto Alegre despite his tender years.
He scored on his Milan debut against Napoli but struggled to maintain his fitness by the end of his time at San Siro, departing with a record of 63 goals in 150 games. The emergence of Stephen El Shaarwy and the signing of Mario Balotelli from Manchester City spelled an end to Pato’s Milan career.
But Arsenal and Tottenham are said to be willing to give Pato a second chance in European football after he scored 16 goals in his first 51 appearances for Corinthians. Pato also has 10 goals in 25 games for Brazil, scoring his first in a 2008 friendly win over Sweden at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.
