Arteta disappointed Arsenal couldn't prise Suarez from Liverpool
Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has admitted he would have loved to see Luis Suarez join the club from Liverpool, Sky Sports has reported, after the Uruguay international was the subject of repeated bids from Arsene Wenger.
Suarez will instead take to the field against Arsenal when Liverpool travel to the Emirates Stadium for a Saturday evening fixture and Arteta insists Suarez would have been a good signing for the Gunners.
The playmaker added that he was not concerned over Suarez’s tendency to get in trouble with the authorities as he knows the true Suarez from his time on Merseyside with Everton.
“People don't know the real Luis,” Arteta said. “He's a really good lad. I know Suarez really well. He used to live in the next house to me and, whenever I've met him, he's always been really nice.
“It's a pity Arsenal could not get Suarez,” Arteta continued. “Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are the two most in-form strikers in the league and will be a big threat to us. But we have the quality to beat them.”
Suarez has only recently returned from a 10-game suspension for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, and was banned for eight games for an incident involving Manchester United’s Patrice Evra. Despite the repeated infractions, Wenger tried to bring Suarez to the club, at one point attempting to trigger a release clause in the forward’s contract with an offer of £40m plus £1.
