Rodwell: Hart still Man City No. 1
Jack Rodwell is the latest player to back Joe Hart following some poor performances from the Manchester City goalkeeper that have seen him come under constant criticism, writes the Guardian.
Rodwell, who played a part of the 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the League Cup on Wednesday, has insisted the squad believe Hart is still considered the club’s best goalkeeper, despite speculation City boss Manuel Pellegrini will drop the 26-year-old.
Costel Pantilimon, the goalkeeper for City’s cup matches, played against Newcastle in the Capital One Cup, but Rodwell was dismissive of the Romanian keeping Hart out of the first team.
“Joe is No. 1 and Costel is good competition for him,” Rodwell said. “We all know Joe is No.1 but Costel put on a good performance against Newcastle.
“He's an international keeper but, having Joe in front of you would be difficult for a lot of keepers. He digs away, puts on a good performance and the Capital One Cup is good for him this season.
“He made two saves which kept us level - if they had gone in, the tie could have gone either way. He's a good lad who trains well every day. He and Richard Wright [the third choice] are both good,” Rodwell added.
Rodwell believes Hart remains first choice but Pellegrini took a different view on the proceedings following the clean sheet display by Pantilimon. “It was a very important match for Costel,” Pellegrini said. “He is a very good goalkeeper. We'll talk with both goalkeepers and I will start thinking about the game against Norwich.”
City host Norwich on Saturday in a match that could see the Canaries climb out of the bottom three, but City will be hoping to put the 2-1 Chelsea defeat behind them.
