Hull v Sunderland - Premier League preview and team news
Saturday 02 November 2013
Having overcome fierce rivals Newcastle in a pulsating derby, Gus Poyet now takes his Black Cats to Hull in search of momentum - something Hull themselves have benefited form so far this season.
Sunderland’s first win of the league season couldn’t have come against a better opponent for their fans, players or management. Their midfield worked tirelessly and battled with grit until the final whistle, seizing Poyet his first victory at the helm. While it will be difficult to keep the same intensity they showed in every game, the spirit and desire will go a long way to help fuel their fight to avoid the drop this season. Poyet must make sure that the foot does not slip off the pedal - winning their first game was a difficult task, but putting a run of results together is an entirely different one. A fit Steven Fletcher is vital for Sunderland.
Hull meanwhile have been on the end of a desperately unlucky week in North London. Having faced Tottenham twice in four days, they have come away empty handed. However Steve Bruce will be the first to point out his side more than held their own against strong opponents, losing by a single goal before an agonising penalty shoot out defeat. What will be hull’s ultimate test is to recover and get back to winning points, something they have done well so far. No side has played Hull and found it an easy game. Bruce knows how to set his side up and this may well be the difference in any potential relegation scrap.
Defender Alex Bruce is a doubt after picking up an injury midweek, while Sone Aluko, calf, and Robbie Brady, hernia, will face late fitness tests. Striker Danny Graham is ineligible against his parent club and will not play.
Sunderland have no fresh injury concerns for the game and could stick with the same XI that beat Newcastle. Poyet will face a decision whether or not to include match winner Borini in the starting line up.
