Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has dismissed suggestions striker Edin Dzeko could be allowed to leave the Premier League club in January, Sky Sports has reported.

Dzeko has scored a goal every other game for City so far this season but has primarily been used as a substitute, not starting in the league in two months. Pellegrini has generally preferred to pair Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo, leading to the Bosnia international being linked with the likes of Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Inter.

But Pellegrini insists he wants to keep the former Wolfsburg forward at the Etihad Stadium, claiming a deep squad is vital to City’s chances of launching a title challenge. “It is not the case [that Dzeko could be sold],” Pellegrini said.

I put my trust in him before the season and I have just as much trust in him now,” the manager continued. “It is very important for this club to have a good squad because we have a lot of games to play from now until April and, if we want to win trophies, we need important players.

Maybe at the moment he is not playing as much as he would like, but he remains an important part of the squad,” the Chilean concluded.

Dzeko has been a City player since January 2011, signed by Pellegrini’s predecessor Roberto Mancini. The 27-year-old has scored 47 goals in 123 appearances.
