Man Utd focused on January signings rather than Rooney contract

Manchester United will delay opening contract talks with Wayne Rooney in order to pay the fullest attention to transfer targets in the January window, the Daily Telegraph has reported, with the Premier League champions said to be eyeing up Leighton Baines, Ander Herrera and Ilkay Gundagon.

Rooney will have 18 months remaining on his current deal as of the New Year but manager David Moyes is understood to want to add to his squad at the earliest opportunity, which would result in Rooney’s contract not being discussed until the window has closed in February at the earliest.

The England international has been in prolific form this season, scoring both goals as United drew 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday at White Hart Lane, but had an unsettled summer after announcing he wanted to leave Old Trafford. Chelsea were interested in Rooney, lodging two bids, both rejected, for the former Everton player. Rooney did not, however, officially ask to leave United.

United are expected to renew a number of contracts when the opportunity arises, with Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, David De Gea and Phil Jones also in line for fresh terms. They would follow teammates Michael Carrick, Luis Nani and Adnan Januzaj, who have all put pen-to-paper in recent months.

The defending champions are currently eighth in the league table, nine points adrift of leaders Arsenal, although they did defeat the Gunners 1-0 in November. United also trail Moyes’ former club Everton by two points, ahead of the first meeting between the Scot and his old employers on Wednesday.
