Southampton boss Pochettino blames errors for home defeat

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has blamed defensive errors for his side’s 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa on Wednesday, which was the Saints’ third successive loss, writes Sky Sports.

Having taken no points from trips to Arsenal and Chelsea, Southampton lost their unbeaten home record against Paul Lambert’s team despite dominating possession throughout and having 21 shots to Aston Villa’s six.

Gabriel Agbonlahor’s solo effort gave the mid-table visitors the lead, only for Jay Rodriguez to equalise shortly after half time. Headers from Villa’s Libor Kozak and Southampton’s Pablo Osvaldo made the score 2-2, but Fabian Delph claimed the winner with a spectacular long range shot.

Afterwards, a bewildered Pochettino said: "Overall, our possession was good but we also made some errors at the back and usually this team is quite solid at the back. They were also lucky in the fact that they had four chances all game and scored from three of them. We created 21 chances, so overall I thought we were unlucky.

"We were just not solid at the back and we were heavily punished. It seemed we had the game under control until they scored their third goal from long range."

The result saw Southampton slip to eighth in the Premier League table, ahead of the game against Manchester City on Saturday. They have now conceded six goals in their last two Premier League outings, having only conceded only seven in the 12 games previous to that.

no strength in depth and lack of match practice for those that came in cost Saints. MoPo needs to rethink his team selection strategy to ensure that those need game time get it or we are going to come unstuck big time
