Manchester United manager David Moyes has admitted that his team are now playing catch-up in the Premier League title race, after his former club Everton triumphed at Old Trafford on Wednesday, Sky Sports is reporting.

Moyes left Everton in the summer after 11 years in charge, to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson, who retired as Man Utd boss in May. On Wednesday, his successor at Goodison Park, Roberto Martinez, oversaw the Merseysider’s first win at Man Utd for 21 years, thanks to Bryan Oviedo’s late strike.

The result leaves United struggling in ninth place, and a full 12 points behind leaders Arsenal after three games without a win since the international break. The defeat was their second at home already this season, having lost to West Bromwich Albion in September, and their fourth overall.

After the game, Moyes conceded that his team now face an uphill struggle to keep pace with the leading group, while praising Everton’s performance. He said: "Yes, big catch-up. We are very disappointed. We didn't take a couple of chances that we had - we needed a bit of good fortune, but one or two things hit the post and Tim Howard made one or two saves.

"Everton kept at it and showed how good a team they are. They got the one goal. We had opportunities, but Everton did as well, they've been playing well and that's why they're up near the top of the league."
