Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is hoping he has seen the last of his injury setbacks after returning to full fitness this week, writes Sky Sports.

Having spent the previous two months on the sidelines with a thigh problem, Kompany returned to the pitch on Wednesday as City won 3-2 at West Bromwich Albion.

Kompany has been a vital part of City’s defence in the past five seasons having played at least 20 matches in each campaign, and the skipper is needed even more so on the road this season with manager Manuel Pellegrini looking to improve their away form.

"I should kick myself sometimes for always wanting to come back too early but that's how I am," said Kompany.

"It's very difficult to change my nature as that is what has made me as a player. I will always keep giving everything I have, whether that is in training or in games. But the medical staff or trainer gets the wiser decision.

"I feel great right now, as in every game I've played, but there is only so much you can promise. You can promise you will do everything right on the pitch but you can't promise your body will always be there.

"I live for my job. Football is my life. If you're not doing that, then you feel you are not doing what you're supposed to. I live my life the way I should do and when I'm fit, like I am now, I feel incredibly strong. I just want a run of games. It's all a matter of getting back into a rhythm."

Kompany came through the West Brom victory without any injury worries and should be fit for the trip to St Mary’s on Saturday to take on Southampton.

City have struggled on the road this season with losses at Aston Villa, Chelsea, Sunderland and Cardiff, but Kompany’s return will give Pellegrini’s side a boost.

Kompany picked up an injury during the Newcastle game in August, and thought he had fully recovered until the home win over Everton saw him ruled out again until December.
