England drawn against Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D

Friday 06 December 2013

England have been drawn in Group D of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil alongside inaugural World Cup winners Uruguay, Costa Rica and European rivals Italy.

England

While the road to the World Cup may have been tough, arguably England’s most memorable night in modern memory would be the 0-0 draw in Rome in 1997 to guarantee qualification to the 1998 World Cup in France – so the Three Lions are certainly capable of pulling out memorable results against the Azzurri.

Things weren’t quite so memorable when the two sides met in Euro 2012, however, when England once again crashed out of a major tournament on penalties against Italy after a 0-0 draw at the quarter final stage.

Overall, Uruguay have a better record against England than the reverse, with the South Americans having won four clashes between the two sides, with one of those being in a World Cup. Their first win was a 4-2 result against the English in the 1954 World Cup, but when the two teams met again in 1966 England fared slightly better – a 0-0 draw.

For those who like history repeating itself, surely a 0-0 draw would be a great result?
