USA coach Klinsmann drawn against native Germany in World Cup 2014
Germany national legend Jurgen Klinsmann will do battle with his home nation in the 2014 World Cup, as current employers USA were drawn in Group G alongside the Germans.
The draw, which took place in Costa do Sauipe on Friday afternoon, saw Germany drawn as the top seed in Group G alongside Ghana, Portugal and the Americans – in what many have already dubbed as a potential “group of death”.
Klinsmann played for his native national side on 80 occasions, netting 38 goals, having previously earned 42 caps playing for West Germany (including Olympic appearances). He had a spell at club level playing in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotsput – where his strike partnership with England striker Teddy Sheringham is still considered among the most potent in Premier League history.
He also spent a spell managing Germany between 2004-2006, and so will not only be looking at the moral ambiguity of taking on one’s own home nation in a World Cup, but will also be facing his former side.
The USA v Germany game takes place on June 26 2014 at Arena Pernambuco in Recife. It represents both sides’ final group game, and so could prove crucial for qualification to the knockout stages.
