Villas-Boas hails Capoue after Spurs win

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas hailed the performance of Etienne Capoue following his side's 2-1 win at Sunderland, Tottenham Hotspur has reported.

Following a defensive injury crisis at the club with Jan Vertonghen and Vlad Chiriches ruled out of the game, the French midfielder was forced into the back line for the trip to Sunderland.

Having gone behind to an Adam Johnson goal, Spurs fought back with a goal from Paulinho getting them on level terms, before John O'Shea scored an own goal to give the North London club the three points.

The Portuguese boss highlighted the performance of Capoue in an unfamiliar position, saying: “It was a great performance by Etienne. We had to shuffle the back four completely, shift Daws to the left (of the central pairing), Naughts came in at left-back and all of them were brilliant.

"Etienne deserves credit because he was looking for a performance like that and he gave it over the 90 minutes. We spoke to him during the week, we all want him to succeed here and great performances like that mean he’s back on track. Everyone is extremely happy for him.”

Capoue signed for Spurs in the summer from Toulouse, for a fee believed to be in the region of £9m, but his season has been disrupted by injury so far restricting him to just four appearances for his new club.

Tottenham complete their Europa League group this Thursday with a home game against Anzhi and will be looking to continue their 100% record in the competition so far, making it six wins from six.
