Man Utd vs Shakhtar Donetsk - Match preview and team news

By Stephen Donovan

Tuesday 10 December 2013

Manchester United may already be assured of their place in the Champions League knockout stages, but they have a lot to prove as they take on Shakhtar Donetsk.

Four Premier League games without a win, and consecutive home defeats for the first time in 11 years have put manager David Moyes under severe pressure, with the Red Devils 13 points off top spot. In Europe however, it has been a different story, with Man Utd’s unbeaten record so far and a superb performance away to Bayer Leverkusen seeing them through.

The Moyes’ sake, they cannot afford to lose again here against a Shakhtar side that has plenty to play for. The Ukrainian champions need to better Leverkusen’s result against Real Sociedad if they are to make it through alongside their opponents. And they are a strong side, possessing the likes of Douglas Costa and Luiz Adriano, so Man Utd will need to be on their game.

The Red Devils continue to be without Michael Carrick, but Wayne Rooney returns after suspension kept him out of the defeat to Newcastle United. Shinji Kagawa should be fit, but Chris Smalling, Marouane Fellaini, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra are all doubtful.

UPDATE: Man Utd team: De Gea; Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Buttner; Jones, Giggs; Januzaj, Kagawa, Young; Rooney.
