Defoe staying put until replacement arrives

Spurs forward Jermaine Defoe will be stuck at White Hart Lane until the appropriate replacement is chosen to supplant him, according to ESPN.

Javier Hernandez has been out of favour under David Moyes at Old Trafford, and could be the player to replace 31-year-old Defoe, who has completed over 25 minutes just three times this season.

Summer signing Roberto Soldado has kept Defoe on the bench at The Lane, allowing him eight substitute appearances this campaign, hindering the forward’s hopes of going to the World Cup with England next summer.

Defoe, the club’s top goalscorer in all competitions, has been linked with various moves, including West Ham and MLS side Toronto, but Spurs are keen to find a replacement for the man who has spent most his career at the North London club.

Former Valencia striker Soldado is Andre Villas-Boas’ preferred choice in the first-team, but the Spaniard has scored just four goals since arriving in England.

Soldado’s four goals in the Premier League have been vital for Spurs, with three 1-0 wins coming from his goals and a 2-0 win away to Aston Villa in October.
