Carragher believes Suarez can be Liverpool's best ever player

Luis Suarez has the potential to become Liverpool’s greatest ever player according to Reds legend Jamie Carragher, writes The Mirror.

Luis Suarez

Suarez had an unsettled summer with Liverpool, publically agitating for a move away from the north west and stating his desire to move to north London with Arsenal. He was convinced to stay put, however, and manager Brendan Rodgers has been rewarded for his resilience with some of Suarez’s finest football to date on Premier League pitches this season.

The Uruguayan striker has looked lethal and considerably happier in his role, forming a dynamic partnership with fellow striker Daniel Sturridge. With Liverpool sitting second in the Premier League table, retired star Carragher believes the 26-year-old is the most gifted Kop star ever – and wants him to continue building his legacy on Merseyside.

“I think he could [be seen as the club's greatest]. I think in terms of ability as a player he could be the best player to play for Liverpool. That's in terms of natural ability and what we see week in and week out.

“But to be known as a top player or the best player at the club alongside people like Dalglish and Gerrard who have won European Cups he's got to win big games and trophies and cup finals. It's about longevity as well. He's got to be there all the time and put a great stint in for the club, but in terms of natural ability he's probably is as good as anything he club has ever had.

“Kenny Dalglish scored the winner in the European Cup Final, Steven Gerrard gave his performance in Istanbul and Suarez would need moments like that.

“If he did have moments like that he could be number one.”

Suarez arrived at Anfield on a five-and-a-half-year contract in 2011, for a then-club record £22.8m – but this record was eclipsed by the arrival of Andy Carroll from Newcastle for £35m just hours later.

He has gone on to make 87 Liverpool appearances, scoring 52 goals.
