Mourinho writes off Chelsea's Champions League chances
Wednesday 11 December 2013
Jose Mourinho has written off Chelsea’s hopes of achieving European glory this season, according to The Mirror.
The former Real Madrid coach has tipped Man City’s recent Champions League victims – and current cup champions - Bayern Munich to claim the trophy again this season, saying that his side are far from favourites to take the honours.
A title win would take Jose Mourinho level with Liverpool legend Bob Paisley on three European championships – and would make him the first to do so with three different sides.
Mourinho first won the title with Portuguese outfit Porto shortly before joining Chelsea for the first time in 2004, and did so again with Inter Milan in 2010. The Blues have ensured their qualification to the next phase of this season’s tournament, but Mourinho remains pessimistic about Chelsea’s chances.
He said: “I think our chances this season - which is my first season - are not comparable with the chances other clubs have. Other clubs have completely different stability, squads and evolution of the team to be considered favourites to win the competition.
“We have reached the last 16, and if we reach the quarter-finals, which is the next step, like every team we will have a chance to win it. But in my analysis, I think we are not considered one of the favourites - my favourites are Bayern.
“They are the European champions, a top club with the same players and a new manager, unbelievable stability.”
