Everton boss Roberto Martinez believes his midfield duo of James McCarthy and Gareth Barry are the perfect partnership and combines experience and youth, writes The Liverpool Echo.

Martinez’s side have lost just once in the Premier League this season to a Manchester City side who are ruthless at the Etihad, but another impressive display against league leaders Arsenal has given the Everton boss more to smile about.

With just one goal conceded in their previous three matches after playing Manchester United, Arsenal and Stoke, Martinez is especially happy with his midfield duo of Gareth Barry and James McCarthy.

“You need that blend of experience and youth and that partnership reflects it perfectly,” said the Blues boss.

“You’ve got the know-how of Gareth and the legs, freshness and bravery of James. Their partnership is as good as it gets in that blend.

“Those two are at the center of everything.”

Barry, 32, is currently on loan at Goodison Park, but has been an important first team player since making the switch from Manchester City in the summer.

The midfielder has started 11 matches this campaign and has remained on the pitch for the whole 90 minutes throughout each appearance.

Aside from his impressive individual performances, it is his partnership with McCarthy that has earned him praise from the Everton manager.

McCarthy, 23, has been alongside Barry for the majority of the season, starting a similar amount of times (12) to the former Aston Villa midfielder.
