Chelsea considering offloading David Luiz to Barcelona in January
Wednesday 11 December 2013
Barcelona could be set to launch a new bid to land Chelsea defender David Luiz, according to The Daily Star.
The 26-year-old is a popular figure at Stamford Bridge, and has attracted attention before – but has managed to get back onto the Catalan giants’ radar as the winter transfer window approaches.
The Daily Star suggests that Barca could be set to offer £29m to tempt the Blues to allow the Brazilian defender to move to the continent, and with Carlos Puyol and Gerard Pique becoming increasingly injury-prone there is a sense of urgency about Gerardo Martino’s approach this time.
Luiz has managed only five Premier League appearances so far this season, having fallen behind the preferred central defensive partnership of John Terry and Gary Cahill, and so there certainly seems to be more scope for a deal to be done than previously. Indeed Chelsea are thought to be more open to allowing the 33-times capped Brazil star to leave than on previous occasions, and could use the funds received to reinvest in other areas as they seek to challenge on all fronts.
