Newcastle line up move for Sporting Lisbon star Capel
Thursday 12 December 2013
The Journal is reporting that Newcastle could be set to swoop for Sporting Lisbon winger Diego Capel, but his current club have admitted that it would take a huge offer to make them even consider doing business.
The deal is thought to represent an opportunity for the Magpies to replace Jonas Gutierrez, who has dropped down the selection pecking order at St. James’ Park and has only featured twice for Newcastle this season – his last appearance was a brief outing against Cardiff at the start of October.
Capel, meanwhile, seems set for a move to the Premier League, with London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham also thought to be interested in signing the 25-year-old. Newcastle, meanwhile, have spent considerable time scouting the continent in order to best assess potential reinforcements as the Toon seek to continue their successful season.
The twice-capped Spanish international is thought to be high on the club’s wishlist, but his current club remain firm in their stance that they will not be offloading any players during the January sales.
Club president Bruno de Carvalho said of a potential deal: “The club has decided that there will be no sales in January. The club is leading the division for the first time in nine years and we are determined to fight for the title.
“Only if a ridiculous offer is put in for a player will it be studied.”
