Villas-Boas praises Soldado but coy on weekend starting place

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas admitted he will need to consider his options ahead of Sunday’s crunch tie with Liverpool after Roberto Soldado’s hat-trick for Spurs may keep Jermaine Defoe sidelined, reports the Daily Mail.

Soldado guided Spurs to victory against Anzhi Makhachkala with a hat-trick to top the group with a 100 per cent record, and with Defoe set to return to the side against Liverpool on Sunday, Villas-Boas will now consider his options.

Defoe is yet to score in the Premier League this campaign, but Soldado’s form had also been dipping with the Spaniard snatching at a number of chances of late, but the Spurs boss is glad the striker has found the net again.

'It was extremely important for him to get back to scoring,' the Portuguese said. 'I'm extremely happy for him. He's been waiting for a moment like this and it finally happened tonight with a hat-trick. It will be major boost for a player who has been very professional and deserve the respect.'

But Villas-Boas was reluctant to rule Defoe out ahead of the clash at White Hart Lane on Sunday, 'We have to think about it,' he added.

'It's a bit premature. We always wanted to give this game to Roberto after two games in a row for Jermain, who was deserving his chance as well. Now it's about putting the best possible strategy of the game and seeing what we can do.’ He said.

Defoe, 31, has made 11 appearances for Spurs this campaign, but eight of them have come from the bench.

Summer-signing Soldado has been the preferred choice upfront for Villas-Boas, with the Spaniard starting 12 times this season, scoring four goals.
