Liverpool should target Champions League says Sakho

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is eyeing a Champions League qualification place at the end of the Premier League season, following his World Cup play-off win with France, reports the Mirror.

The 23-year-old had an influential performance for Les Blues against Ukraine, scoring two goals to send France to Brazil for next summer’s World Cup finals.

The former Paris Saints-Germain player has found himself back in the back-line for Liverpool after struggling to settle in to the defensive line, with Brendan Rodgers changing the system a number of times.

“Of course everybody has winning the league in their sights but our main objective this season is to get in the Champions League. We’re working hard to achieve that. The team is playing well, the spirit is good and we are moving forward together.”

Sakho is used to having a mid-season winter break in his career, but there will be the opposite in the Premier League as the festive period brings a hectic schedule for Liverpool, who face five teams in just 15 days.

But the Frenchman doesn’t see the fixture pile-up to be a problem, "I will be able to adapt - that won’t be a problem. This time of year will be like preparation for next season, when we hope to be back in the Champions League and playing even more games,” he insisted.

“We all realise the importance of these big games coming up. We’ll play as hard as we can to get the points we need to remain in the top four.” He added.

Sakho has represented his country on each level of international football, making appearances at Under-16, 17, 18, 19, 21 and the senior squad for France.

The defender has made eight appearances in the Premier League this season for the Reds, scoring one goal.
