Suarez in line for Liverpool captaincy

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is considering whether to hand the captain’s armband to Luis Suarez, while regular skipper Steven Gerrard is absent through injury, writes the

Daily Telegraph.

Gerrard picked up a hamstring injury in the victory over West Ham United last time out, and is expected to be out of action for around a month. Daniel Agger is the current vice-captain, but Rodgers must decide whether to restore him to the starting line-up after he missed the previous game through illness.

Asked if Suarez could take over the captaincy for Sunday’s visit to Tottenham, Rodgers said: “Would Luis be ready for the captaincy? One hundred per cent. Absolutely. We will have to wait and see what my decision is at White Hart Lane.

“Daniel Agger is fit. He didn’t train at the start of the week because he was ill, but he has been training now and he’s available for selection.’

Should he captain the Reds at White Hart Lane, it would complete a remarkable turnaround for Suarez, who looked set to leave the club during the summer, while he was still serving a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic. Since his return from suspension, however, he has been in devastating form, scoring 14 goals in 10 games.
