Everton youngster Deulofeu to be out for several weeks

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has admitted that young forward Gerard Deulofeu is likely to be out for ‘some time’, after the Spaniard picked up a hamstring injury in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Fulham, BBC Sport has reported.

The 19-year-old Deulofeu was making only his second Premier League start on Saturday, after joining on a season-long loan from Barcelona in the summer. However, he was forced off shortly before the hour mark after feeling his hamstring, and was replaced by Kevin Mirallas, who went on to score Everton’s fourth goal.

After the game, when asked about the injury, Martinez said: "We don't know how big the tear is going to be but we expect Gerard to be out for some time. It is unfortunate because I thought he was ready to play a big role. We are going to have to be patient and wait for him to come back in the final third of the season as strong as he can be."

"Straight away he felt it and it's something we will assess. Gerard is like a sprinter and clearly the hamstrings are exposed in those sort of injuries."

Overall, he has made 14 appearances for Everton, scoring three goals, including the equaliser in an impressive draw away to leaders Arsenal. Saturday’s win lifted them to fourth place, just four points off top spot.
