Cardiff boss Mackay seeks new team spine in January

Cardiff could be looking to install a new spine to the team in the January transfer window as boss Malky Mackay looks to help stave off relegation, according to The Mirror.

It is believed that Mackay could be looking to strengthen his first team with three new players - a defender, a midfielder and an attacker – as Cardiff look to keep themselves away from a relegation scrap by the time May rolls around.

They currently sit only four points above the drop zone, and while the bottom three traditionally find points hard to come by the Welshmen will be looking to ensure they are not dragged in to the scary end of things.

Mackay said: “It would be great if we can bring in three quality additions.

“I would look to strengthen all three departments with a defender, a midfielder and an attacking player.”

Cardiff spent money in the summer window by bringing in the likes of Gary Medel and Steven Caulker, but Mackay believes that the Bluebirds will have to be a touch more cautious during the approaching window.

He continued: “I will talk to my chairman who will then discuss it with his board of directors and our owner - it’s a different type of window though and you have to be careful.

“There’s not quite the array of talent out there in January and people are leaving clubs for different reasons.”
