West Brom draw up list of candidates to replace Steve Clarke, club legend McInnes linked

West Brom have already drawn up a list of candidates to replace dismissed manager Steve Clarke, reports Sky Sports.

Steve Clarke

Roberto Di Matteo was the early favourite, but is understood to not yet be ready to return to football after leaving Chelsea last season – and so the Baggies board look set to turn their sights elsewhere, with Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes and former Man United number two Mike Phelan thought to be topping the shortlist.

McInnes served West Brom as a player for three years after joining the midland outfit in 2000, and is still regarded as something of a club legend – and so his appointment is sure to be one to go down well with the fans, especially considering his track record at Pittodrie where he has helped turn around Sir Alex Ferguson’s former club – to the point they sit fourth in the SPL, albeit with a 10 point deficit behind champions Celtic.

Phelan, meanwhile, could take charge and form a management team with Michael Appleton, another former West Brom player – who also played for Phelan’s former club Man United, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – current Molde coach and another ex-Red Devil – is also considered a contender, as is Martin Jol - the recently dismissed former Fulham boss.

Paul Clement, whose brother Neil is another West Brom hero, is also a contender – he currently plies his trade at Real Madrid.

Clarke was dismissed on Saturday following a fourth straight Premier League loss, a 1-0 defeat to Welsh outfit Cardiff.
