Chelsea closing in on capture of Inter midfielder Guarin

Chelsea are believed to be closing in on the £15m capture of Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin, according to The Independent.

Fredy Guarin

Blues boss Jose Mourinho, himself a former Inter manager, is wanting to raid his former club in the hopes of keeping Chelsea’s quadruple-hunt in tact – and finally link up with Guarin, who also shares Portuguese outfit Porto as a former club, who Mourinho led to the Champions League title in 2004.

Chelsea initially offered £12m for the 27-year-old, but his approach was rebuffed – and so the Portuguese hopes the improved offer will tempt the Italians into negotiations.

Other Premier League clubs are thought to be interested in Guarin, with Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool linked in recent days, but the Chelsea reports have continued to be the strongest despite the Stamford Bridge outfit being expected to have a fairly quiet transfer window in January.

With Marco van Ginkel suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury, Ramires and Frank Lampard have been used regularly in the center of midfield, and so Mourinho appears keen to add a name to that list to take some of the pressure off, and also increase competition for places.

Guarin is relatively versatile in the middle of the park, proving himself in both the middle and also on the right of midfield. He has won 47 caps for his native Colombia so far.
