Napoli coach Benitez keen on reunion with LIverpool defender Agger

Tuesday 17 December 2013

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is keen on a reunion with Reds defender Daniel Agger at Napoli, according to The Guardian.

Daniel Agger

Agger recently lost his place in the Liverpool starting lineup to Mamadou Sakho, and Benitez is thought to want to test incumbent Brendan Rodgers’ resolve to keep the Dane by making a move to take the former Brondby defender to Italy on loan.

It is believed that Napoli representatives were in contact with Liverpool on Monday in relation to getting the ball rolling on the deal, which would see Benitez signing the 29-year-old for the second time having been the manager to take Agger to Anfield in the first place back in 2006.

Agger was made vice-captain in the summer as Liverpool sought to fight off interest from Spanish giants Barcelona, but has missed out as Rodgers seeks to establish a new long-term central defensive partnership.

Kolo Toure has also been selected ahead of Agger in recent weeks, and so Napoli are confident that a deal can be done to see the reunion take place, albeit on a temporary basis. With reported interest from elsewhere on the content as well as closer to home in the form of Man City in recent months, however, a permanent offer could also be made by a rival party – and so the Reds may face a sterner test to keep their defender than is currently confirmed.
