Stoke vs Man Utd - Match preview and team news

By Stephen Donovan

Wednesday 18 December 2013

Manchester United will be looking to build on Sunday’s win at Aston Villa by reaching the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup at Stoke City’s expense.

Stoke, who have not won any of their 11 Premier League meetings with the Red Devils, recovered from an incredible fightback by 2011 winners Birmingham City to win on penalties and reach this stage, and at present they are in a fairly secure position in the Premier League. Indeed, only missed chances late on at Hull City prevented them from moving seven points clear of the drop zone.

The win at Villa Park was a welcome relief for Man Utd boss David Moyes, who had previously presided over four league games without a win. It was arguably their best performance of the season so far in the Premier League, with the likes of Adnan Januzaj and Antonio Valencia proving to be much more of a threat in wide areas.

The hosts will still be without defender Robert Huth, who is recovering from knee surgery. Meanwhile, Matthew Etherington could return from a back injury.

Man Utd are still without Michael Carrick and Robin van Persie, but Darren Fletcher could feature after making a substitute appearance at Villa.
