Liverpool reward Suarez form with big contract

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has committed his future to the Anfield outfit by signing a bumper new contract thought to be worth in the region of £225k-per-week, according to The Mirror.

The Uruguayan had looked set to leave the club in the summer following a very public courtship with Arsenal, but manager Brendan Rodgers was ultimately able to retain his services – and the player has been in utterly deadly form ever since.

He has netted 17 goals from only 11 games this season, and was keen to reiterate to Liverpool’s official website his love for the club. He said: “I am delighted to have agreed a new deal with Liverpool and have my future secured for the long term. We have some great players and the team is growing and improving all the time. I believe I can achieve the ambitions of winning trophies and playing at the very highest level with Liverpool. My aim is to help get us there as quickly as possible.

“Without doubt the backing I have received from the Liverpool fans has influenced my decision. I am so proud to represent them and go out to do my best for them every time I pull on the shirt. We have a special relationship; they have love for me and in return I love them back. I will always do my best for them and hopefully we can achieve success together.”

Former Liverpool and England legend John Barnes, however, seems somewhat unconvinced by Suarez’s new commitment, warning that the striker could still leave the Kop following the World Cup.

Speaking to talkSPORT before news was confirmed on Suarez’s new deal, Barnes warned: “He has to want to stay. I want him to stay at Liverpool because he is a fantastic player and he will help Liverpool, but only if he wants to be here. He has to be committed to the club.

“As much as he is playing well now, I don’t think it will be good for the club long-term because every time there is a transfer window it is going to rear its head. If he signs a new contract, he has to just say ‘I’m staying for the next five years’.

“We cannot have a situation whereby he comes back from the World Cup and there are still rumours he wants to leave.”
