Manchester United defender Phil Jones believes the Premier League champions must retain the high tempo at which they have played of late in order to get back into the title race this season, Sky Sports has reported.

United’s hopes of competing with the likes of Arsenal at the top of the table were dented by consecutive home defeats to Everton and Newcastle at the beginning of December, but David Moyes’ side have since won four games in a row in reply, beating Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, Stoke City in the League Cup and Aston Villa and West Ham in the Premier League.

Jones feels the most recent successes came as a result of United stepping up a gear and restoring a style of play that has more in common with United’s approach of recent years. “We needed to play at a higher tempo,” the England international said after the 3-1 win over the Hammers on Saturday.

We have done well to bounce back from those disappointments against Everton and Newcastle,” Jones continued. “We have shown on Saturday - and in the previous games - we are starting to find our feet again in the United way.

It has been a good couple of weeks,” he added. “I think we can all start to feel there is more of an understanding at what the manager wants. The last four games have been an indication we are getting to that stage.

We are in a good place at the moment. We are playing well. We are passing the ball well.

United next play Hull City on Boxing Day. Moyes’ side are currently eighth in the table with 28 points from their opening 17 games, eight points behind league leaders Liverpool, and eight points ahead of the Tigers.
