Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool to battle for Real Madrid star Alonso
Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool could be set for a bitter transfer battle to bring Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso back to the Premier League, according to The Daily Star.
Alonso, 32, had looked set to sign a contract extension at the Bernabeu but this now seems to have been put on the back burner, with no agreement yet in place and little sign of movement with regards to an offer being made.
Speaking of Alonso, Real manager Carlo Ancelotti seemed nonchalant, insisting that the club have no dependence on the Spaniard’s presence.
He said: “The club has no further information regarding his renewal - but if he signs or not, he is our player until the summer of 2014 and if he is available, he will play.
“We have other important players and have played half of the season without him and the results have been good.”
Alonso joined Real in 2009 from Liverpool, who are keen to re-sign their former hero. The chiefs at Anfield have displayed a preference for signing younger players in recent seasons, but would be willing to stump up the cash for a player as highly thought of at the club as Alonso.
Man United are known admirers and manager David Moyes still has midfield strengthening at the top of his new year to-do list, while Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wants a reunion with the player, who he worked with during his own tenure at the Bernebeu.
