West Brom confident of keeping striker Long

West Bromwich Albion manager Keith Downing has said that he is confident that the club will be able to hold on to striker Shane Long, writes Sky Sports ahead of the January transfer window.

Shane Long

Toward the end of the summer, Long had a medical at Hull City ahead of a proposed move to the KC Stadium, but the move did not go through in time, meaning he was forced to stay in the West Midlands, where he has scored three goals in 15 appearances in all competitions.

Despite that, Hull are still thought to be interested in signing the Republic of Ireland international, with their manager Steve Bruce admitting that he would ‘love’ to make another bid for Long, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

While Downing - who took charge of Albion for the 1-1 draw against the Tigers on Saturday - admits that the current managerial situation at the club makes Long’s future more uncertain, he is optimistic that the 26-year-old will stay at the Hawthorns. "We are treating it that Shane is very much part of the set-up here," the former Cheltenham Town boss told the Daily Star.

"The club are actively trying to get him to sign a new deal and we're quite confident of keeping him."
