Sterling can make it to Brazil, Liverpool boss Rodgers believes

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said that winger Raheem Sterling could make the England World Cup squad if he continues his excellent form, the Daily Mail has reported.

Raheem Sterling

Sterling has just the one England cap, coming on as a substitute as a 17-year-old during the 4-2 defeat away to Sweden in November 2012, although he has often been called up by manager Roy Hodgson. For the U-21 team, he has three goals from his eight caps.

There is plenty of competition for an England starting berth in the wide positions, with Andros Townsend, Theo Walcott, James Milner and Aaron Lennon also vying for a place in Hodgson’s starting XI for the tournament in Brazil, which for England, begins against Italy in Manaus on June 14.

Sterling has struggled for form for much of the past year, but in recent weeks he has shown signs that he is once again beginning to fulfil his potential, scoring in three of Liverpool’s last four Premier League games.

And Rodgers believes that Sterling does have a chance of making it into Hodgson’s 23-man squad, which will be announced in May. He said: ‘Raheem has got every opportunity with England. He’s been able to showcase his talents. He’s done very well for the Under-21s when he’s played.

‘He has shown he is back now to that level where he is really aggressive and direct. And what Raheem is doing is scoring goals, which is important. He’s still so young - he was only 19 the other week - and I’m sure there will be other dips along the way.
