Top 5 Players to watch in the Premier League on Boxing Day

By Stephen Donovan

Tuesday 24 December 2013

Boxing Day fixtures in the Premier League often provide plenty of entertainment and this one should be no different. These five players could be right in the thick of the action:

The Brazilian has been absent with an injury in recent weeks and made his comeback as a substitute at Arsenal on Monday. Before he was ruled out, Oscar had been arguably Chelsea’s best player during the season, and it will be intriguing to see if the youngster can regain that excellent form and prise open the Swansea City defence.

Emmanuel Adebayor

Tim Sherwood has rescued Adebayor from the White Hart Lane wilderness, and he has been repaid as the striker scored twice at Southampton to give Tottenham a vital win, adding to his goal in the Capital One Cup four days earlier. And with Roberto Soldado alongside him, it could be the beginning of a successful strike partnership, so West Bromwich Albion may have reasons to be fearful.

Ross Barkley

Ross Barkley

The young Everton star is the name on everybody’s lips at present, as it is not only his manager tipping him as a star of the future. His match-winning display at Swansea City did nothing to harm his burgeoning reputation, and Sunderland will be particularly wary of him when they visit fortress Goodison Park.

Yohan Cabaye

On Saturday, Cabaye continued from where he left off at Old Trafford - after being suspended for the draw with Southampton - by scoring the opening goal in Newcastle’s fine win at Crystal Palace. He will have a tough midfield battle against Stoke City though, made even harder by the absence of partner in crime Cheick Tiote, who serves a one-match ban.

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling

Towards the end of what has been a somewhat difficult 2013 for the 19-year-old, he has shown evidence in recent weeks that he is beginning to regain the form which made him one of English football’s hottest prospects a year ago. On Boxing Day, he faces a tough assignment against home specialists Manchester City, where, while he will look to make an impact going forward, he will be needed to put in a shift in defence.
