Cardiff vs Sunderland - Premier League preview and team news
Saturday 28 December 2013
Saturday’s late kick-off in the Premier League is another vital clash, as bottom club Sunderland visit South Wales.
Malky Mackay’s job security was done no favours by his Cardiff City side on Boxing Day as they capitulated in the first half-hour against Southampton to lose 3-0, giving away some soft goals in the process. Played out in front of watching owner Vincent Tan, the result left Cardiff just a point above the relegation zone, and four ahead of their opponents.
Sunderland are slowly becoming more and more optimistic that they can maintain their Premier League status, and they upset the odds emphatically by becoming the first team to win at Everton for nearly a year. They were gifted a goal and a one man advantage, but they handled a second half Everton onslaught manfully although Vito Mannone was needed to pull off several fine saves to keep the lead intact.
Gary Medel could return from illness in time to play for Cardiff, but Craig Bellamy is likely to miss out once again with a knee injury.
The visitors are without Wes Brown, who serves the second game of a three-match ban. Mannone should stay in goal in the absence of Kieren Westwood.
