Everton vs Southampton - Premier League preview and team news

By Stephen Donovan

Sunday 29 December 2013

Everton will be hoping to recover from the shock of losing at home to Sunderland by defeating Southampton at Goodison Park.

Despite the setback, Toffee boss Roberto Martinez still found plenty of reasons to be positive. The goal came from a horrendous mistake at the back, and after they were reduced to 10 men, Everton showed some real spirit and resolve to make light of their one man disadvantage, with only a series of superb saves from Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone keeping them at bay.

The Saints emphatically returned to winning ways with a devastating first half hour at the Cardiff City Stadium on Boxing Day, as they rediscovered the form which lifted them to as high as third earlier on in the campaign. Mauricio Pochettino’s first game in charge was against Everton back in January, and that display was a reminder of how far they have come since then.

The home side are without goalkeeper Tim Howard, so Joel Robles will replace him in goal. Gareth Barry is also suspended, but Ross Barkley should also return after being rested against Sunderland.

Artur Boruc and Victor Wanyama are both out for Southampton, but Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Pablo Osvaldo are all back in contention.
