Chelsea vs Liverpool - Premier League preview and team news

By Stephen Donovan

Sunday 29 December 2013

After narrowly falling short at Manchester City on Boxing Day, Liverpool now have another extremely difficult away game, at Chelsea.

The Blues produced a much better showing against Swansea City than they have at times this season, but again they were dogged by their failure to put the game beyond doubt, due to a combination of poor finishing and fine goalkeeping. However, their current position of third, just two points off the lead is looking quite ominous for the rest, given that they have not played anywhere near their best this season.

Liverpool emerged from their defeat at the Etihad Stadium with a great deal of credit, as they gave Man City - seemingly unbeatable at home - a very stern test which showed why they are being viewed by many as realistic title contenders.

They deserved at least a point for their efforts, but were left to rue Simon Mignolet’s mistake for the winning goal, and some decisions which went against them, something which Brendan Rodgers was quick to point out.

Jose Mourinho could rotate his Chelsea team, with possible recalls for Cesar Azpilicueta and Fernando Torres, but Ramires is banned after picking up five bookings.

Jose Enrique, Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge are still out for Liverpool, and Jon Flanagan may not recover from injury in time to play a part.
