Mourinho will let Mata leave Chelsea
Jose Mourinho has revealed he will not stand in the way of Juan Mata if the Spain international wants to leave Chelsea during the transfer window, Sky Sports has reported.
Mourinho stressed he does not want Mata to depart Stamford Bridge but suggested that if the player is unhappy with his position in the Chelsea squad, he should discuss it with the manager and see if a solution can be found.
“I want to keep him. I don't want him to go. That is my opinion, my wish, but my door is open,” Mourinho said. “The club's door is open too so when a player wants to speak to us we are there waiting for them. If you are asking do you want the club to sell him? I don't want to.”
Mata was replaced early in the second-half of Chelsea’s win over Southampton on New Year’s Day with the game scoreless. Chelsea eventually ran out 3-0 winners with Willian and Oscar, who replaced Mata and Andre Schurrle, starring.
Mourinho added that the situation was the same regarding Michael Essien, who has been on the fringes of the first team of late as well. “I offer nobody - not Michael, not nobody (guaranteed playing time),” the former Real Madrid boss said.
“I understand that players think about national team, the World Cup and playing regularly, but my players have to think of the team before the players. Michael knows that perfectly,” Mourinho continued.
