Newcastle vs Cardiff - Match preview and team news

Friday 03 January 2014

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first match in charge of Cardiff City is a challenging third round FA Cup tie at St. James’ Park.

Hosts Newcastle United will be growing ever more desperate to win a major trophy, having waited 45 years since their previous triumph. They have suffered two Premier League defeats in the past week, which have brought their amazing run - which saw them surge into the top six - to an abrupt end. The performances against Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion were decent, but in both games they were unable to carve out many chances.

After a considerable amount if speculation, Solskjaer’s appearance at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday alongside Cardiff owner Vincent Tan confirmed that he would be the successor to Malky Mackay. Solskjaer has already enjoyed a fair amount of success as a manager, winning two league titles with Molde in his native Norway.

The former Manchester United striker arrives at Cardiff with the club just a point and a place ahead of the Premier League relegation zone, but he will still view this game as important, as it provides him with the chance to make a positive impact ahead of the crucial game at home to West Ham United.

Mathieu Debuchy is suspended for Newcastle after his sending off at West Brom, and captain Fabricio Coloccini will be out for six weeks, so Mapou Yanga Mbiwa is likely to take his place.

Cardiff should be able to call upon Kevin Theophile-Catherine and Jordon Mutch, with both having suffered with minor injuries. Andrew Taylor could also return.
