Liverpool vs Oldham - Match preview and team news

Sunday 05 January 2014

For the third season in succession, Liverpool have been drawn to face League One club Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup.

The Reds will be thankful that this tie is at Anfield, having lost away to the Latics last season in a major fourth round shock, mainly due to some pitiful defending. That came just over a year after a 5-1 victory for Liverpool on Merseyside.

Victory over Hull City on New Year’s Day was a much-needed Premier League boost for the seven-time FA Cup winners, as goals from Daniel Agger and Luis Suarez helped to repair the damage of the defeats away to Manchester City and Chelsea.

Oldham come into this game in a fairly similar position than they did for last season’s encounter. League One’s longest serving club, defeat at home to Shrewsbury Town in Wednesday means they are outside the relegation zone only on goal difference. Despite that, performances have been good, but they have conceded the first goal in 16 of their 20 league matches.

Steven Gerrard make his first start for Liverpool since returning from injury, but Daniel Sturridge, Mamadou Sakho and Joe Allen are out.

New signings Simon Harkins and David Worrall could be given their Oldham debuts by manager Lee Johnson.
