West Ham want Man City defender Lescott, with Tottenham also in the frame

West Ham want to sign Man City defender Joleon Lescott this month in an effort to recover from their current relegation-threatened predicament, writes The Independent.

Joleon Lescott

The news was revealed by none other than Hammers boss himself Sam Allardyce, who admitted that he wants to bring the former Everton and current England defender to the Boleyn Ground on loan in order to strengthen his side’s options at the back.

With Allardyce also looking to bring French goalkeeper Claude Dielna to the club, the club’s precarious league standing is clearly at the forefront of the manager’s mind during the current transfer window.

The former Newcastle manager will also likely be hoping that some solid and exciting signings will also help his own tentative position at the club, with owners David Gold and David Sullivan giving the Yorkshireman a dreaded vote of confidence on Monday.

Sunday’s disastrous 5-0 defeat at Championship outfit Nottingham Forest highlighted the club’s defensive shortcomings, albeit with a drastically changed first team selection. The prospect, therefore, of seeing Lescott pulling on the claret of West Ham is a move that will surely garner some approvingly raised eyebrows.

West Ham could face competition from the likes of Tottenham and Besiktas for the £22m man, who signed for City from Everton in August 2009. He has gone on to make over a century of appearances for the Citizens, but has found first team opportunities a battle this season, and could feasibly seek a move away in order to bolster his chances of selection for England’s World Cup campaign in the summer.

Speaking of the deal, Allardyce said: "I don't know if Joleon is available, but if it is possible I would like to get him."
