Tuesday 07 January 2014

All the pressure will be on Manchester United on Tuesday as they travel to Sunderland for the first leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final.

This game is played just two days since the two clubs were last in action, and while Man Utd were the biggest-name casualty in the FA Cup third round, Sunderland eased past Carlisle United to advance. The Wearside club will see this as a great chance to reach the new Wembley for the first time, in a competition that has served them well this season despite their desperate position in the Premier League.

The fact that Man Utd are away may come as a relief to manager David Moyes following two crushing home defeats. They are unbeaten on the road since they lost the Manchester derby in September, a run which includes victory at the Stadium of Light thanks to Adnan Januzaj’s double. Having been knocked out of the FA Cup, and with the Premier League title beginning to look out of reach, Moyes will be delighted to make this his first major trophy win.

Sunderland have an injury crisis in central defence, with Wes Brown their only available senior option as Modibo Diakite, John O’Shea, Carlos Cuellar and Valetin Roberge all miss out.

Phil Jones, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie remain out for Man Utd, who will assess the fitness of Rio Ferdinand. Fabio da Silva is suspended after his sending off on Sunday.
