Wenger targets Morata for Arsenal as short-term solution
Wednesday 08 January 2014
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has asked Real Madrid about the possibility of loaning striker Alvaro Morata for the rest of the season, ESPN has reported.
Wenger is seeking a short-term solution to the striker problems afflicting his squad after Theo Walcott was ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury. Walcott was injured playing against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup on Saturday and is expected to miss the summer’s World Cup.
Olivier Giroud has been carrying the load for Arsenal’s attack for much of the season, with Nicklas Bendtner offering support. But Giroud has shown signs of fatigue and the Denmark international is also struggling with an injury, likely to miss another month.
Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have also missed lengthy parts of the campaign, leading Wenger to explore other options in the transfer window. The report claims Wenger has long-term designs on Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko, Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa and Porto’s Jackson Martinez, among others, but has identified Morata as a temporary signing.
