Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is about to add another name to his squad with the signing of Estudiantes defender Santiago Vergini, Sky Sports has reported.

Vergini only moved to Estudiantes last summer but his club have confirmed his desire to leave and their willingness to let him. “He wants to leave Estudiantes, and as he isn't a player that is considered as principle in the squad, we have accepted his departure,” the club’s president, Enrique Lombardi, said.

He wants to change team, and as there is a good offer that we have analysed, he will leave our club,” Lombardi added.

It is thought Vergini will make the switch to the Stadium of Light, following Marcos Alonso, the former Bolton Wanderers left-back who has joined on loan from Fiorentina and made his debut in the 2-1 Capital One Cup semi-final first-leg win over Manchester United on Tuesday.

Vergini, 25, moved to Estudiantes from Newell’s Old Boys, where he was part of the title-winning side, and has one cap for Argentina, won in 2012.
