Chelsea boss Mourinho plays down move for Man Utd's Rooney

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has silenced speculation linking Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney with the London club in the summer, according to Sky Sports.

The Blues have previously failed with two bids for the forward but the Portuguese boss refused to speak about any interest in the player.

At a press conference on Friday Mourinho said: “I don't want to speak about it. We play Man United in a few days. I don't think it's nice to speak about a Man United player.”

Rumours of an exit have followed the 28-year-old as his contract expires next year and will only have 12 months to run if he does not sign an extension in the summer.

“You have to ask him (Rooney). You have to ask the player. And Man United because Man United has a contract with the player that doesn't end at the end of the season,” added Mourinho.

United currently sit in seventh place but with 18 games left to play Mourinho still believes they can be in the top four come the end of the season.

The two Premier League giants will clash on January 19 when the Red Devils visit Stamford Bridge.
